M-Tech®L, S and P
The Shim. The Concept.
Flexible methods for the tolerance compensation in the component assemblies.
An economical solution for the whole process chain.
Shims for tolerance compensation have been a speciality at MARTIN® for roughly 50 years. We are the sole manufacturer in Germany for the M-Tech®L laminated shim stock.
In line with this concept, it is the shims which enable and considerably improve the entire process chain: construction / processes + logistics in the manufacture / maintenance of components. The actual solution in the implementation phase lies in the choice of the shim material.
Various materials and material structures can be selected, depending on the application. The following key points are important for profitable operation on a routine daily basis.
There are 6 main arguments in favour of using shims.
Click on the headlines and find out more:
1. Reduction of machine and processing costs.
On one hand, the tolerance of the components doesn't have to be so precise when manufacturing parts which are to fit together.
- Less expense, time and effort in the manufacture of components.
- The problem of cumulative tolerance can be easily solved subsequently using shims and spacers. Several joint surfacees can be constructed with a bigger tolerance.
- In this way, mechanical processing can be simplified or avoid together.
2. Reduction of processing time.
The other general advantages lies in the fact that, with the availibility of the compensation elements, processing time is saved when the components are assembled:
- No need to transport the component to a stationary machine.
- No need to consider machine capacity limits; on-time readiness.
- Independence in regard to the location when manufacturing or setting the tolerance in both the OEM and MRO areas.
- Components do not have to be clasified by fit tolerance during preliminary operation.
- The manual assembly result is achieved quicker with the suitable shims than without.
3. Increase user's motivation.
- Handling advantages are produced because you can select the material structure of the spacer shim (laminated, solid, or edge bonded) to match your adjustment task.
- This means that you can work with a suitable combination of thicker and thinner shim elements which are connects to one another. Adjusting process will be done quicker and this can also reduce time searching for the right shim.
4. Repair costs are reduced.
Easier logistics and handling will specially have effect on the maintenance process.
- By allocating ONE defined shim unit in accordance with your drawing to ONE connection joint, in which you can also define the structures of the shims with a view toward possible demands. The confusion in regards of the thickness of the shim elements can be also avoids. In this way, there are no more waiting times for Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) due to unforessen fitting problems.
5. Stock control is simplified
- by the use of laminated shims. One single laminated shim can replace numbers of solid shims by means of thickness variation. The highly flexible M-Tech®L solution reduces the searching process, facilitate the stock inventory control and avoid the assembly standstill.
6. Cash-flow will be improved.
After the 5 measures mentioned previously,
- Costs of investment in machines will be reduced.
- Time and effort for logistics, purchasing and production planning will be decreased.
- Payment process will be accelerated through reduced lead times.
