Spacer foils

Spacer foils are metal shims; the material is very thin, which is why they are particularly suited for compensating manufacturing tolerances. We process foils with a thickness from one hundredth of a millimetre. Conventional foil thicknesses are 0.05 or 0.075 mm.

Variants

These material thicknesses are also used in the manufacture of laminated sheets. Individually bonded or laminated along the contour, there are corresponding products in our M-Tech®L  and M-Tech®P product lines.

Manufacturing method

We use stamping, lasering, nibbling or shear separation processes as manufacturing methods for spacer foils.

Field of application

Spacer foils are particularly suited for applications where fine finishing is a less cost-effective method of achieving dimensional accuracy of the joint components. These products are less suited for highly automated series production for example in automobile manufacturing.

Handling

The way in which spacer foils are used depends on their composition.

With M-Tech®L, the individual foils are peeled off, for instance with a knife, to achieve the desired thickness.

With M-Tech®P, the individual foils can be removed from the shim by hand.

With solid foils (M-Tech®F and S), the desired distance can be achieved by using several inserts or inserts which have been ground accordingly.
